Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Part II (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: Recently dead lawman is given an opportunity to skip hell's grasp by enforcing the rules of the beyond and retrieving the wandering dead. But his death might just be part of a bigger picture.
This horror-comedy has a truly awful reputation and, sadly, it has earned it. A blatant knock-off of Men In Black's formula and plot beats only with none of the charm, creativity, energy, or visual pizzaz. There are elements in this that could have worked had they not been buried in a slog of ugly CGI, tired cliches, and lazy writing that thinks itself clever for being aware how low effort it is. One thing, though: I kind of enjoyed Jeff Bridges' scenery chewing, bonkers portrayal of the mandatory old, cantankerous, confident, and lovably bizarre foil to the hero (Ryan Reynolds, blissfully not in full-on "Reynolds mode" here). This one is bad but in such a gobsmackingly shameless way that you and someone else might fight yourselves having fun deriding it.
