Plot: A group of deserters, from different walks of life, flee the ravages of the English Civil War only to find that the hellish misery of existence rages on even in the unassuming expanses of a field.
Unique in its presentation and constantly toying with surrealism, the film both mystifies and illuminates in a frequently alternating fashion. The cinematography and editing are exceptional, especially for such a minimalist effort (I especially loved the use of tableau to punctuate chapters). The characters' rapport and friction, however, are the lifeblood of this intense piece. This movie will alienate plenty of viewers (and it certainly is not what anyone thinks when they conjure images of the standard horror flick), however, A Field in England is a monumental achievement of arthouse cinema. A Viscerally bleak, though thoroughly engaging, trudge through the most uncomely aspects of men.
