Plot: A girl on the verge of womanhood inadvertently opens a door to darkness that soon consumes her world. Beautifully shot, stuffed with wonderfully chilling horror set pieces and a palpable atmosphere, this could easily be a Spanish companion piece to The Conjuring outings (especially given that its loosely based on true events). Not to be cornered, however, Veronica deftly manipulates tried and true tropes and formulas into something of a multi-layered, metaphor heavy (and very bleak) coming-of-age story, proving that the familiar can be made to feel fresh.

Plot: A man pursues revenge against a serial killer whose modus operandi has virtually made him one with his weapon of choice...his vehicle. The cast is talented, the idea is very promising (especially in regards to the quirks of the killer) and it's well shot but there is something vital missing in the final product. The film seems utterly unwilling to mine the material or characters, opting instead to just wallow in passable mediocrity. It's a damn shame that something that could have been memorable is just woefully empty.

Plot: A diner in the middle of nowhere becomes the battleground for a final confrontation between the armies of an angry God and a rebellious archangel who holds hope in humanity. Slap The Prophecy onto a Terminator 2 framework and throw in perceptions of angels from the biblical to It's A Wonderful Life and you might get this action-forward/horror light flick. More of a cool idea than a fantastic carryout, the movie is bogged down by a dull stretch of poor character development that would of been better spent focusing on the supernatural elements and action to spare the audience the poor writing. It's no prize winner but it can serve as a leave-your-brain-at-the-door bit of entertainment if curiosity gets the better of you.

Plot: A group of kids stumbles across a book that unleashes a bevy of uncanny things into their midst. A visually appealing but ultimately somewhat empty and trope-heavy outing. It also perplexingly avoids the source material idea of an anthology and more inserts the characters into the movie's scenario while never much elaborating upon them. All in all, a loss for those that enjoyed the books and would have welcomed elaboration and those who felt they'd be in for something fresh. Inoffensive but forgettable.

Plot: A man discovers the horrors of a small Spanish fishing village after his companions are stranded offshore but the secrets of Imboca might be more far-reaching than he expected. This is basically an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's Shadows Over Innsmouth, retooled to be set in Spain, with some additional color added to the story here and there that evokes the concepts of Lovecraft's mythos. Though there is much to appreciate, it's also impossible to notice the budgetary constraints when CGI effects are used, the somewhat uneven performances, and the proliferation of awkward direction, choreography, and performances. Nevertheless, certain moments and elements (the location, some great physical effects, a particular flashback sequence, and segments with a legit otherworldly vibe) shine through to create an enjoyable product for those willing to forgive some shortcomings.
