Gaia
Plot: A park ranger stumbles across a duo of survivalists with an unsettlingly slavish devotion to nature. The lines between normalcy and something far more ominous become immediately blurred and it soon is evident to our hapless protagonist that the men's motives are far from those of civilized people. "Gaia" captures the notoriously elusive aura of cosmic horror and rides it towards its ominous conclusion. Along the way strangeness abounds. From eco-horror to surrealist nightmare and then some, Gaia is Lovecraftian without the expected overtures. Excellent.

The Witch
Plot: Shunned from their religious community, a puritanical family led by a well-meaning but oppressively zealous father venture into the wilderness, where they confront the supernatural...and themselves. Gorgeously shot, meticulously paced, rife with understated but impactful imagery, and, like any great horror story, pointing out the true monsters that reside in us, "The Witch" is an undisputable classic. A masterpiece!
