Dark Waters
Plot: A woman investigating her father's legacy of patronage heads to an island run by a cloister of nuns only to uncover an increasingly disturbing link between her past and something ancient and evil. Deeply atmospheric and bordering on surrealistic, this truly feels like an undiscovered gem overdue for reappraisal. The story resides somewhere between the structure of Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth and the nightmare fugue logic of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond. Making the most out of its small budget and Ukrainian locations, the film is beautifully shot and displays some unique imagery. Minimalist in nature, Deep Waters does an impressive job of relaying an aura of cosmicism and a waking nightmare. Not for everyone but fans of these particular elements will be very delighted by what was achieved.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin
Plot: Margot, the subject of a documentary about the mother that abandoned her, traces her roots to an Amish community deep in the Pennsylvania woods. Feeling like a combination of elements from "Midsommar" (only nowhere near as good) and "The Last Exorcism" (only unwisely keeping the aforementioned found footage angle), this movie is a mixed bag. Locations, an intriguing mystery (even when bluntly unraveled), some nice horror set pieces, and a decent payoff make it worthwhile. However, you have to wade through the over-complicated way they felt the need to sow in the use of cameras, some uneven acting, some confounding moments where they ignore the found footage gimmick, some undeserved jump scares, and a face reveal that should have NEVER happened. Ultimately, the story would have been better served by a directly cinematic approach and not being latched onto the series as it is a stand alone sequel. PA fans won't appreciate that it does nothing to add to the OG series and the average viewer will find it hard to look past its flaws. Still, you can see how it could of been good as some of those moments remain. Better than PA: The Ghost Dimension, anyway.

Mohawk (2017)
Plot: An action-horror flick set during the War of 1812 that pits a vengeance driven native woman against a group of uncouth Americans after their own revenge. What sounds like a great setup ultimately falls victim to its rough, uneven nature. The performances vary wildly in quality, some creative choices pass off as innovative while the rest of the film wallows in predictable retread territory, and budgetary restraints often keep things just south of stellar. There are far worse movies but Mohawk seems like one that had potential to be more. Alas, it is so tepid that it never roars off the screen with its strengths (its lead, heroes that defy the current cultural status quo, an interesting concept). Rather, you leave it behind stewing in its mediocrity an wishing you had loved it.
