Apollo 18
Plot: Leaked footage of a top secret 18th Apollo mission to the moon unveils the appalling truth behind the events. A particularly bland found footage offering that thoroughly fails to maintain immersion, credibility, or tension throughout. Some plot similarities might make you want to call it a poor man's Alien but that is giving it too much credit. Zero atmosphere and a laughable threat are just the cherry on this unimpressive heap. It's not even "so bad, it's good"...it's just there to be forgotten.

The Tingler
Plot: A scientist obsessed with the nature of fear finds himself in a chain of events that prove his theory of a parasitic organism that feeds off of fright. One of several William Castle productions that partially built themselves around an interactive gimmick to sell tickets, The Tingler predictably only stumbles when the moments requiring interactivity come up during home viewing. Up till then (silly science notwithstanding) it actually manages to be an entertaining sci-fi/horror piece eased along by some marital melodrama and well employed twists. Vincent Price, as always, is delight, the cast is strong, and the charm of the gimmicks (even when they can't be directly experience) still resonate enough to make one smile. It has all the markers of a cult classic and has earned that status for a good reason.

The Raven
Plot: A powerful sorcerer is dragged into a duplicitous power struggle by a couple of his occultic compatriots. One of Roger Corman's many adaptations of Poe's work, The Raven uses the famous poem as a springboard for a fantastical plot about wizards vying for great power. Sounds dark but it's actually a light-hearted, humorous affair led by the charm and prowess of three horror heavies (Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Peter Lorre). In lesser hands the material might show how thin it truly is but with the three leads it's a delight to watch. Cheap? Sure. Charming? Very. Well worth it to see three legends play off of each other with tongues planted firmly in cheek. Bonus: Look out for an early Jack Nicholson role.

Scream and Scream Again
Plot: International intrigue and mad science intertwine as a detective and a coroner try to figure out the root cause to some serial murders. Though intentionally vague for the bulk of its running time, the film largely feels frustratingly slapdash. Sly humor and mystery do little to assuage the notion that big names are being frivolously wasted and that a number of scenes bloat out the material unnecessarily. When all is said and done, the resolution plays like some inane reward shoe-horned into the story to justify the what you just watched. Still, its applied cleverly enough and, courtesy of thinly veiled allegory, manages to come off as pretty ominous. A fun concept that is often derailed by an incongruous score, a lack of judicious editing, and a messy buildup.

The Wild Man of the Navidad

4/10

The Wild Man of the Navidad
Plot: Hunting season rolls around and a reclusive landowner opens up his land to the hunters to make ends meet. Alas, this disrupts the uneasy truce he has with a bizarre inhabitant therein. The budget is low, the actors are amateurs, and it avoids the more interesting real life roots of the story but somehow all the rough edges give it some charm. Using the framework of a recreation of events and openly admitting to using locals to play parts helps blunt the impact of its limitations (as does the aura of a gritty b-movie and a tongue planted firmly in cheek). Though it often stumbles on its uphill battle (and is sometimes thrown directly off course by the unnecessary seedier elements), the movie still isn't a total loss. However, it ultimately does leave you wishing the end results were better.

Mister Creep
Plot: A group of students pursue the legend of a serial killer who may still be active...despite being long dead. A phenomenally idiotic film rife with moronic characters who spew imbecilic dialogue while making confounding decisions. Can't blame the actors (inadequate though they are) for a script that revels in dumb tropes and careless storytelling. A better writer/director would of done well to lean into the more abstract elements to at least foster and maintain an unsettling atmosphere. Alas, whatever few moments show remote promise are quickly deflated by the inane story and annoying characters. Movies like this are why found footage is often disregarded.

The Fly
Plot: The mystery of a woman who seemingly killed her husband slowly reveals itself to be much more horrific than anyone anticipated. An undeniable classic of he atomic age era of sci-fi/horror pictures, The Fly comes packed with a rock solid cast, a surprisingly strong female lead (especially for the times), and several memorable moments that hold up well. The movie shows an admirable restraint which certainly helps soften the blow of the more hokey elements to a modern viewer. Part mystery, part tragic love story, part cautionary science fiction, and part horror, The Fly proves to be a lot more efficient than one would suspect.
