Some loyalists of the book bemoan the material that is "missing" but, truly, this is a fantastic and concise adaptation of the legendary novel that was something of a watershed moment in vampire pop culture. Capturing all the themes of loss, loneliness, purpose, morality, and the many other burdens of existence through the lens of a slew of vampire personalities, the movie also manages to balance its dense contemplative nature with a lush and rousing production that rarely lets up. Gothic and grandiose as it is lavish and melodramatic, this one expertly walks a fine line and achieves what it sets out to do. Add to that excellent direction and a cast that wrings credibility out of what could easily have been absurd and you have yourself a classic.
