Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: If you read the title you probably already know what the plot is.
Insert standard animal gone wild movie tropes and then force in some weak attempts at fleshing out the creature and you have this bland schlocker whose only claim to fame is that it was directed by Tobe Hooper. Texas Chainsaw this ain't, however. All you'll find is generic (and irritating) character that serve as fodder, effects that go from bad to worse, and an embarrassing turn behind the camera from a legend in the genre. Hooper fans might find some pleasure in pointing out the occasional Hooperism and fans of this particular sub-genre have definitely seen worse but that still doesn't make this anywhere near good.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: Forced into a deal after his work is stolen, a musician's wrath is unleashed when all he holds dear is put on the line.
A reimagining of The Phantom of the Opera as a darkly comedic rock opera, the film eviscerates the cynical, creatively bankrupt, and highly exploitative world of music production with chaotic glee while never deviating far from the structure of the inspiring source material. Director Brian De Palma's keen eye is unleashed in the colorful and bombastically produced world of the story with frenetically engaging energy. Leaning more on the engrained Faustian elements for horror while depending on the nature of theatre for its pleasant overtures of camp, Phantom of the Paradise is as unique as they get. Fans of musicals, kitsch, and the bizarre...this one's for you.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: A writer is plagued by a series of unsettling encounters that unseat his personal life and eventually change his perception of the universe.
Based on the purportedly true close encounter events experienced by Whitley Strieber (and adapted by him), this movie quickly falls prey to poor character work, an absurd amount of disposable sequences, uneven acting that fails to communicate the character's emotions competently, lackluster editing, and a languid pace. NEVERTHELESS, it is worth at least a cursory glance for the confoundingly bizarre performance from Christopher Walken and the encounter sequences which vacillate from inane madness to slightly unsettling with their nightmare logic. Communion is ultimately a film I can only describe as godawfully strange.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: An ancient receptacle protected by a sect of priests is investigated by a group of physics students who soon succumb to its influence. An influence that may be the very source of belief in the Devil.
The lines between tradition and science blur in this thickly atmospheric ode to Nigel Kneale's work. Carpenter, evokes a sense of pervasive dread and conjures up some exceptionally memorable horror set pieces that transcend the tight budget. Complete with an ominous score and one helluva chilling ending, Prince of Darkness will make your skin crawl.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: A new tenant finds himself succumbing to the whims of "the slime" after he finds himself curiously addicted to an elixir brewed by a former resident.
Slime City is a late 80's entry into the body horror sub-genre that will certainly be a most pleasant surprise for fans of trash cinema and low-budget melt flicks. Anybody else need not apply, believe me. Dripping with bad acting, poorly executed humor, some ambitious effects, and a score only the 80's could love, the flick still maintains a cheesy homespun charm for fans of such things. Street Trash (1987) this is not but its slower and rough around the edges cheapness kind of contributes to its particular vibe.
