Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Part II (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: A man is locked both into a public restroom and a ritual of cosmic importance with an unfathomable entity that resides therein.
For a film that largely depends on a single location and a couple of actors (one of which is not onscreen), Glorious mounts quite the competent punch as an entry into Lovecraftian/cosmic horror. Making potent use of dark humor and a constant dialogue exchange, the flick paints a picture for the viewer that could serve as a pretty solid introduction to Lovecraftian concepts for any novices while providing clever fun to anybody well-versed in the subject. It also builds up quite nicely and comes with a couple of twists that play with expectations quite nicely. A surprisingly good example of a low budget being used to your benefit. Funny, weird, and fresh.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Part II (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: A toy engineer uses her niece's grief (and her own priorities) as an impetus to further development of a robotic doll companion.
This light but engaging sci-fi/horror piece takes Frankenstein's themes of scientific responsibility and the importance of a relationship between a creator and their creation and places them firmly in a modern world where they meld with concerns about rampant AI learning and the overdependence on technology. It's not subtle but it sure makes for tongue in cheek fun that still carries a sound connection with issues relevant to the viewers. The flick also takes it time to build up characters before charging head on into the horror, something appreciated in a story that uses many familiar elements. As a further bonus, M3GAN herself (itself?) effortlessly scoops up horror icon status with her unique aesthetic, an assortment of fun set pieces, and the solid mix of camp and gleefully ghastly energy.
