Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: The fourth installment into the found footage horror anthology is easily the weakest of the bunch.
A poorly acted and scripted wraparound bookends entries that range from decent to fun to out of place to downright hammy. All's fair play in anthologies, of course, but the real issue here is that the talent involved doesn't provide particularly substantial or high quality input. Still, "The Empty Wake" shines with it's fantastic effects and simple format, creature vignette "Storm Drain" ends strongly (if a bit to familiarly), and much fun is to be had with "The Subject" though it's CGI blood and overall tone feels wildly out of place with the aesthetic of he series. "Terror" proves to be the weakest installment if only because it feels like its satirical aspects and tongue-in-cheek (and all too transparent) narrative dissonate with the vibe of the series the most.

Plot: A highly revered priest carrying a decades old burden of sin is called to face an evil linked to his past.
This movie lives and breathes its direct-to-video fate which, to many, will be a death knell. Nonetheless, it manages to achieve what a lot of imitators of "The Exorcist" failed to. Namely, to provide something besides cheap sensationalism and grue that those flicks over-relied on. Those elements are still part of this film's aesthetic but it also injects intriguing themes about the nature of sin, self-doubt, and forgiveness while also taking some jabs at the Catholic Churches mishandling of sexual deviance and even the idea that repression is a gateway to evil. Not to imply this is a fine tuned work of art that deftly handles these themes throughout but, it is an amusing balance of the excesses of exploitation and a legit effort to tell a story. "The Exorcism of God" openly acknowledges that it is borderline cribbing the story beats of "The Exorcist" but it also amusingly flips the formula on its head a few times. "The Exorcism of God" is seedy and prone to theatrics but it's also admirably ambitious and reminiscent of those not-so-theater-worthy rental store finds that did something for you despite their shortcomings.

Movie Maniac posted a review of Rendel (2017)
“"Rendel" boasts that it's the first full length superhero from Finland and, sadly, that ends up feeling like the only questionable accolade it truly deserves. The story centers around a vengeful vigilante taking down a corrupt pharmaceutical company run by cartoonishly over-the-top thugs that, natur” read more
