Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: Orphans of Mexico's cartel violence struggle not only to cope with the the cruelties of its reality but also the lingering victims of its savagery in this tragic dark fantasy.
Though it very clearly owes a heavy debt to both "The Devil's Backbone" and "Pan's Labyrinth" from Guillermo Del Toro, the flick manages to carve out a morbidly gorgeous place for itself in the multitude of genres it so deftly handles. Delicately walking the line between surrealism and cruel reality, the filmmakers craft a tale that not only feels true to the Mexican tradition of storytelling but also feels like a creative vent for the frustrations of an entire nation. Fantastic!

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list
Plot: A pair of siblings return home to see out their father's last days only to encounter the increasingly undeniable presence of an entity set on consuming his soul.
A sense of grief and melancholic estrangement quickly makes way for pervasive dread framed in a restrained and visually impactful way reminiscent of the writer/director's most famous contribution to horror, The Strangers. Chills are earned and the entity's influence weighs dreadfully over every scene. Methodically paced, the unnerving tensions mount until you find the movie howling to its bleak end. The Dark and the Wicked somehow manages to be both subdued and luridly relentless.
