Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list

Plot: An archeologist's obsession with a legendary Egyptian queen binds his newborn daughter (and him) to an uncanny and inescapable fate. What it lacks in subtlety it makes up with a structure and atmosphere that resides comfortably somewhere between old school Hammer or Universal horror films and the aesthetic of the 70's brood of horror. Making use of great locations and a villain that impresses itself on the viewer by flexing its influence "behind the curtain", "The Awakening" feels like a movie that was released in the wrong decade. Though it wears its influences on its sleeves, this one is still bound to please a certain ilk of horror fan. I count myself among those.

Movie Maniac added 1 item to Terror Blurbs! Pt. 1 (An Ever-Expanding List) list

Plot: Three college students head to a neighboring city in search of exotic entertainment but instead find themselves in an increasingly strange series of events involving albino punks, strippers, and vampires. With its colorful lighting, tropey leads, physical effects, and campy, tongue-in-cheek humor, "Vamp" has a lot of the charm that seems almost exclusive to 80's horror comedies even if it falls quite a bit short from being a classic. The "one helluva night" simplicity of the plot is fun until it begins to feel stretched thin in a bid to fill time. Still, it's not a total waste of time and plenty of weirdness and quirky charm abounds in a movie that feels like a lesser predecessor to "From Dusk Till Dawn".
