Plot: A stone-hearted man brings an unspeakable curse down on his lordship with his callous acts against those he finds undesirable.
A period piece approach, a proliferation of werewolf tropes (from Romani gypsies, to silver bullets to mysticism meets science), might seem to its detriment but "The Cursed" makes a most effective use out of them while giving them a voraciously fresh bite. Themes of the social decay that a patriarchal society creates keep things surprisingly relevant and yet never weigh down the proceedings. Add to that a haunting atmosphere, considerable restraint when it comes to showing the beast, a fantastic cast, top notch locations and costuming, and solid effects work and you have a winner. A good werewolf movie is hard to come by, a great one is even rarer...this one is excellent.
